Problem[edit]

The game quickly crashes and Windows displays the error message "Oblivion has stopped working".

Cause - Insufficient Hardware[edit]

This error can often be a result of insufficient hardware, a common case for laptops (or lower-end desktops not at all intended for gaming) that do not have separate graphics cards.

Solution: See System Requirements, and Check your Dxdiag (Start > run > enter "dxdiag") and if after "Display Devices: " the entry says "chipset" or does not say ATI XX or NVIDIA XX, your system lacks a separate card. It is often very difficult to upgrade systems that were not build to include separate cards, as they usually lack the space or supporting hardware to add one. Some of the newer Intel MOBO chipsets can run the game at minimal settings with the latest driver updates, but the typical resolution to this situation is to by a machine intended for at least gaming or more graphics-intensive activity, even serious movie-watching.

Oldblivion is a good place at which to get help with running Oblivion (and other games) on older hardware.

Solution: Upgrade your machine to a gaming-ready machine.
