Quest-Related Events[edit]
Onward to Shadowfen[edit]
You will first encounter him outside of Mournhold alongside Ganthis after defeating Vox and being sent to Shadowfen.
- "Can you distract Ganthis Fancypants so my brother and I can sneak off to get a drink? There's not much mead in Shadowfen, and what the Argonians drink ... well, I'd rather taste rotmeth.
No? Oh, well."
And Throw Away The Key[edit]
He is encountered again outside White Rose Prison where he will appear from a smokescreen and approach you exclaiming:
- "A visitor? To the prison? How unusual!"
A keystone is found in White Rose Prison, which could be a boon to the Pact's war efforts. However, the prisoners are distrustful of strangers. Hernik would like you to speak to the prisoner's leader to secure the keystone:
- "Another visitor to White Rose Prison? This isn't exactly the main route."
- Then what are you doing here?
- "The vicecanons tracked one of the long-lost keystones to White Rose Prison. If we can recover it, this artifact would be a major boon to our war efforts.
Unfortunately, the prisoners don't trust the vicecanons, which means they don't trust me." - Perhaps they'll talk to me.
- "You're welcome to try. We need that keystone.
Look for General Raetus, an old Imperial general they left here to rot. He's the prisoners' leader." - I'll go speak with him.
You can ask him further questions about the prison:
- "Hopefully, the prisoners will let you in. We need that keystone."
- What can you tell me about the prison?
- "Very little. The Imperials built it in the First Era. When they were pushed out of Shadowfen, they abandoned it.
I'm not sure why the prisoners remained. Some say they're cursed."
- "Very little. The Imperials built it in the First Era. When they were pushed out of Shadowfen, they abandoned it.
- Is there anything I should know about General Raetus?
- "He had the reputation of being honorable, at least for an Imperial.
I don't know what he did to get left here, but it must've been bad. The Empire abandoned a skilled general."
- "He had the reputation of being honorable, at least for an Imperial.
- What's a keystone?
- "Argonian artifacts of great power. Legend ties them to various ruins throughout Shadowfen. The vicecanons can't let them fall into the wrong hands."
- What can you tell me about the prison?
The Keystone[edit]
If you freed the prisoners, after speaking to the general, you will find the gerent outside of the prison:
- "Do you have it? Did you find the keystone?"
- I used the keystone to free the prisoners. We won't have it against the Dominion.
- "You used it to release the prisoners? I hope they were worth it. The keystones may be our only hope for defeating the Dominion.
Still, the vicecanons sent word. I trust your decision will be best for Shadowfen."
Speaking with him after the quest:
- "That can't have been an easy decision. Prisoners freed into the fens? Who knows what they'll do with their freedom?
I received a message. The Dominion finally made their move against Loriasel."
If you took the keystone, he will be tied up by the stocks.
- "Please, get me out of here before those cannibals rip me apart."
- Are you all right?
- "I can walk if you get me free of these bonds."
- Just a moment, I'll untie you.
After freeing him, he heads on outside.
- Gerent Hernik: "We need to get away. Meet me outside the prison."
Speaking with him outside:
- "Thanks for saving me back there. Whatever you did, General Raetus wasn't pleased, not at all.
Did you recover the keystone?" - Yes. I … absorbed it.
- "You absorbed it?
Well, I suppose that's better than leaving it, as long as we can still access its power."
Speaking with him again after the quest:
- "I pity the prisoners, but without the keystones, we might not be able to defeat the Dominion.
I received a message. The Dominion made their move against Loriasel."
