Can't Get Scroll[edit]
I seem to have a problem where i cleared the ruins and killed Vokun/took his mask. Then forgot to get the scroll, now whenever i try to get the scroll it is inaccessible. — Unsigned comment by 24.4.51.222 (talk) at 21:58 on 14 December 2011
- As do I. It is closed off by a portcullis or something. Even the "secret" exit is still closed although i cleared it, I forgot to grab the scroll the first time around and now i can't get back in. — Unsigned comment by 24.4.51.222 (talk) at 07:54 on 18 December 2011

- To fix it open the console and type 'help "vokun" 4'. It will give you a ID that references the NPC vokun. Type in the console 'player.placeatme npc id here'. Kill vokun again and the door should open. Hopefully. — Unsigned comment by 76.92.219.165 (talk) at 03:35 on 6 August 2012
Bug: Endless Combat stance[edit]
A few paces before the door to the final zone of the dungeon, Anska got locked in combat. All Draugr were dead, but she stood there, spells at the ready. I was unable to talk to her and she wouldn't move. This made completing impossible, unless I killed her. What did work, I consoled "Resurrect" and everything went back to normal. Maybe should be noted on the not-talk page Faceshifter 17:32, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
- Another way to fix it was i opened the console clicked on her and typed disable, she despawned, then typed enable to cause her to respawn before i closed the console, she came back working again.... -Anony — Unsigned comment by 209.91.107.236 (talk) at 20:34 on 16 January 2012 (UTC)
- Have come across the same Bug in Skyrim SE. Can attest to Anony's console fix working. Thanks. — Unsigned comment by 88.145.181.244 (talk) at 21:06 on 30 July 2017 (UTC)
- I was able to fix the problem by using Unrelenting Force (two Words: Force, Balance). This damaged Anska enough to drop her to her knees without killing her. I immediately entered dialogue, and she seemed to behave normally. (I have no basis for comparison to "normal" dialogue in this instance, as this is my first playthrough, however she accepted the scroll and gave me the Spell Tome: Flaming Familiar, then wandered off.) Note that this was performed on the original V.1.00.4.0 version of Skyrim, on an XBOX 360. I do not know whether using Unrelenting Force will make Anska hostile, although I suspect that it may have. Initiating dialogue as quickly as possible while she is 'down' seemed to pre-empt any hostility, however I cannot be certain. Saving before attempting is advised. I hope that this helps anyone who is stuck by this bug. [First-time post. Please excuse any ignorance of format or convention.] 49.195.58.190 16:33, 2 September 2019 (UTC) Anonymous

Does not "end"?[edit]
I cleared out the place and got the scroll. Anska has the scroll and I can ask her "So what does it say?" to which she only ever replies: "Let me look. This is a very exciting moment for me. Hmm. It's encrypted. It;ll take a while to figure this out.". By a "while", according to my game, it's been months. So she never actually "decrypts" it. Is this supposed to be part of some larger quest or does she merely never finish it? The tomb also won't respawn, not while she's standing inside of it "decrypting" it. — Unsigned comment by 50.103.46.55 (talk) at 06:04 on 4 January 2012
- i have the same issue. when returning to finish other quests, i have to resurrect vokun to access the word of power area 76.97.10.250 18:11, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Fire protection[edit]
Before entering Vokun's Throne Room I equipped all my fire resisting gear (3 items, each at 21% protection), and quaffed a potion of fire resistance (which gave another 5%). Vokun never used his staff, just attacked me with his much weaker (it seems) lightning spells, and I dispatched him without too much trouble (certainly nowhere near as much as I had with Krosus who had a similar staff, and whom I encountered without fire protection) so I presume that my high level of protection changed his tactics. I would add this information to the main page, but don't know if it's reliable. Peterguard 11:45, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Leveled atronach ?[edit]
Instead of a flame atronach, I faced a storm atronach. Maybe it is leveled or randomized... — Unsigned comment by 193.48.25.225 (talk) at 12:50 on 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- I faced a Frost Atronach, so randomization may be the case. 86.147.19.63 23:21, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

- In the Creation Kit, the only thing I can see Vokun being able to summon is a Storm Atronach. Testing in-game, I also only ever get Storm Atronachs at levels 1, 19, and 36. Can anybody else confirm if they're getting something other than Storm Atronachs? Perhaps this was changed at some point. – Robin Hood↝talk 08:12, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

- I just went through this at level 68, and the summoned Atronach was a Storm Atronach for me. --Abacus707 23:43, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Walkthrough revision required?[edit]
I've just expanded the description sections for High Gate Ruins. Given that this quest is basically "follow the dungeon through to the end", I don't think the walkthrough needs to be as detailed as it is - it duplicates a lot of location-specific info. There are, however, several things that should go on this page instead, such as being unable to tell Anska to wait once she starts following you, and her propensity for talking about the Soul Gem in the catacombs before it can be seen. --Reka 19:44, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I've reworked the walkthrough. I've tried to retain the walkthrough feel while omitting as much of the dungeon description as necessary (i.e. duplicate content that is found on the dungeon page and doesn't relate specifically to this quest). --Reka 10:30, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Objectives Bug[edit]
I accidently killed Anska (or Vokun did, whichever way you want to look at it), and now I have the scroll. Unfortunately, I cannot ditch it, and the objective menu only has the first objective, which has the solid diamond (denoting success?) and the words are greyed out, which, of the top of my head, means I failed that part of the quest? Either way it's also under the Finished Quest list.
For those who want to know, I'm just guessing about the nature of the status of the mission, basing it off a rescue mission based on the Thalmor and a certain Grey Mane, which I completed (though not without slaghtering the damn Elves when I said I wouldn't). Apologies if this is a bit vauge. 86.147.19.63 23:39, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
- EDIT: While I think about it, I did shoot her believing she was just a bandit when I first entered the cave. The mission itself was still fully working as it should, more or less. 86.147.19.63 01:16, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
Weak Characters[edit]
For what it's worth, as a level 22, I stumbled onto this quest.. and after three attempts, I can say actually killing Vokun myself was well out of my ability. It seemed, however, that Anska kept recovering.. so I locked her in the room with him, let her wheedle him down, fired with arrows when I could (always crouching and ducking back into an alcove with jars before Vokun would fully notice me) and made ample use of save and autosave. Ultimately, she destroyed him with little aid on my part--though I did manage to land the last blow with a Dwarven Bow of Animus. Unfortunately, I didn't have a big enough soul gem to trap Vokun in, though. So, basically, I figure Vokun can't kill Anska, only followers and player can. — Unsigned comment by 24.2.73.10 (talk) on 21 March 2012
Puzzle Information[edit]
The current language of the walkthrough assumes that the player has any understanding of Skyrim's puzzles at all. I suggest that additional information about the puzzles encountered be provided. GodRaine 1.1.21.0 PC 01:03, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- The best I can do right now is a link to the puzzles section. If you or anyone can provide details on the puzzles then please add as they should be detailed. The Silencer has spokenTalk 01:27, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
- The soul gem on the pressure plate that releases a couple of draugr when removed is not necessarily a black soul gem. I went through there at Level 32 and it was a Grand Soul Gem. I have corrected this on the page. Also, Anska is supposed to warn you about this gem in dialog, but she nearly always delivers her line at the wrong time. 174.6.51.17 16:04, 28 January 2014 (GMT)
Anska comes along whether you like it or not[edit]
The notes say one can talk to Anska and then leave her where she is until the quest is finished. I haven't figured out how to do this - once I say I'll help, she follows along and only has dialogue options for "What scroll?" and "Vokun?", even though I've already talked her her about those. I decided to go through with it (and set her to essential just in case, bwahaha), but it might be helpful to clarify, for those without the almighty console. 24.237.192.137 05:48, 27 December 2012 (GMT)
- That note is a mistake. I'll remove it. Thanks for noticing! --Krusty (talk) 11:42, 27 December 2012 (GMT)
- Actually, it is possible NOT to talk to Anska after entering the Ruins, so Player can go through without her, kill everything... After killing Vokun she will "pop up" into the chambers, her dialogue will have only two options about Vokun? and Scroll? (or whatever). It is then possible to take the scroll (then the quest will start), and to give it to her (and the quest will finish).Sergio Morozov (talk) 18:09, 11 January 2013 (GMT)
- True, but we don't actually deal with cheats on the main articles - that's why the note was a mistake. --Krusty (talk) 18:52, 11 January 2013 (GMT)
- I would not call this a "cheat". Because not to talk to Anska is as legitimate as to talk to her. Maybe the Dragonborn is shy buddy, and does not generally talk to lasses found in nordic ruins? Sergio Morozov (talk) 20:44, 11 January 2013 (GMT)

Unfinished area/quest?[edit]
I was expecting deathlords to burst out of their graves along with Vokun, but there's none. The 4 standing graves are mere decorations. Also, Anska said it'll take some time to decipher the scroll, but I don't know how that's going to end.
Btw, once out of the ruins, the 2 half-buried dragurs just popped out, but remained dead. I was excited for that half second. 50.0.25.231 05:58, 2 March 2013 (GMT)
Anska vanishes[edit]
I charged ahead and being very high-level with a ridiculously overpowered and over-enchanted Dwarven Crossbow from Dawnguard and the full Cyclone shout from Dragonborn, managed to plow my way up to and through Vokun in short order. My follower, Serana, kept close behind me all the way. However, somewhere in the catacombs, Anska vanished. The objective marker to give her the scroll now points to a section of the floor in the catacombs, and there is no indication that the quest has failed. When I try to move her to my position using prid and moveto player, I succeed in selecting her and the objective marker on the floor moves to wherever I am, but Anska does not reappear. ??? 174.6.51.17 19:22, 10 March 2013 (GMT)
Anska Wandering About[edit]
I did this quest a while ago. Recently I encountered her wandering about Skyrim. She was walking north past Whiterun. I thought I might be able to find out if she was done decoding the scroll, but her talk options hadn't changed. It was sill "Vokun?" and "What scroll?" — Unsigned comment by Secret Jedi (talk • contribs) at 18:48 on 12 April 2013 (GMT)
- Later I encountered her again when I fast traveled to a large Forsworn encampment. The Forsworn noticed us and started a huge brawl. Anska immediately took my side, so she's still a member of the PlayerFaction. Other than that, no change, still the same talk options and she immediately wanders down the road. — Unsigned comment by Secret Jedi (talk • contribs) at 15:31 on 23 April 2013 (GMT)

- As there seems to be no-one joining in on this topic, this seems to be something very rare. Did you do your observations on PC, PS3 or Xbox 360? —MortenOSlash (talk) 18:10, 23 April 2013 (GMT)
Odd objective issue at end of quest[edit]
I've played through a few times now, and don't recall this happening before.
I have Anska standing beside me, so she's fine. I have Jordis, my wife/follower standing beside me and the scroll in front of me ready to pick up. So I'm past the dragon priest, I left Jordis behind at that point so that she & Anska wouldn't become enemies while fighting the dragon priest & then I had her follow me again. So all's cool right, and I'm at stage 80.
I then pick up the scroll and I'm at stage 90, and the objectives properly update onscreen. My objective now is Return the Scroll to Anska. Then I give her the scroll. Now, instead of stage 100 for a successful quest completion, I jumped to 150. The quest completes, and I even get the spell tome reward, and Anska starts to walk away. But in the journal, the Objective for returning the scroll is still unfinished, and the overall quest description says that I have failed to protect Anska, even though she just walked away from me. I also can't have further conversations with her either.
Also, the scroll is not removed, so for some reason the game thinks that Anska is dead, but gave me the reward anyway. Weird
Anybody ever see that ?

Problematic for followers[edit]
Be careful how your followers are armed if you plan to take them along. Lydia and a staff of fireballs, for instance, is an absolutely lethal combination -- she'll hit Anska with splash damage and the two of them will be fighting in no time at all. Someone like Aranea Ienith, who favors lighting bolts, is ideal. Going through the tomb with Anska and Aranea in tow is a little like advancing under the cover of a rolling artillery barrage: no sooner do draugr appear than then are lit up with half a dozen bolts and sent packing for Oblivion. Vokun himself lasted less than thirty seconds.... 174.6.51.17 16:13, 28 January 2014 (GMT)
- This is pretty much true of any followers that use AoE spells, whether by spell or staff. There is already a note on the Followers page addressing this. --Xyzzy Talk 22:40, 28 January 2014 (GMT)
Bug in the room with 4 levers[edit]
On my PC I can't use the levers in the room with the portcullis in the center. I hit the key to "Activate Lever" (E key on my keyboard) and they just sit there. Tried activating them in order anyway and nothing happens. E key works everywhere else in game as normal. Can't get the portcullis to swing open so I can't continue the quest beyond this room. Anyone encountered this? --71.226.107.245 00:43, 27 January 2017 (UTC)

- What platform are you playing, and what edition (plain or SE)? Are you sure you do not have any mods installed that might interfere with the levers in an indirect way? —MortenOSlash (talk) 06:14, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

- I have the same issue, playing the SE on PC edition and no mods or patches installed. Can't seem to find any info on the internet, nor the right console command to skip. Reloading autosave doesn't fix it, haven't tried restarting the dungeon yet. Eventually turned off collision and walked though the gate, thus bypassing the puzzle part.
