Daedric Userbox[edit]

Hey Eshe, I noticed a small typo the other day in the Daedric Userbox that I made (there should be an "is" in there somewhere). I saw that you were using it and thought I should give you the heads up. --SubtleCynicism 21:13, 3 October 2007 (EDT)

I didn't even notice that! Thanks for pointing it out ;). --Eshetalk21:16, 3 October 2007 (EDT)

Console.[edit]

Hello, Eshe. I just wanted to clarify this issue with the console. I admit I don't know the position here with regard to mentioning the console as a possible solution. But don't you think it is better to avoid mentioning the console other than for fixing bugs and such things? The reason I say this is almost anything can be done by using the console, so it is actually quite redundant. And also in this case (Volanaro) it seems as if that's how it is meant to be in the game. The player just has to buy the spell before Volanaro dies. It is a perfectly logical solution. Isn't it one of the challenges of the game, which we love so much? Using the console here seems to be a shortcut to me. Can you please clarify? --Mankar Camoran 11:23, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

It is kind of a shortcut, and I agree that it might be unnecessary. If we mention all the cases in which the console might be used to solve a problem...well, you can imagine where we might end up. I guess I don't have any strong opinions in this case, particularly because I can't use the console myself and don't really know how likely it would be for someone to want that particular information. I basically just acted on instinct, assuming it would be useful information. It would probably be best to either undo my revision or ask the opinion of someone wiser than I ;). --Eshe 13:50, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
May I opine? In this case, it's not like missing the spell ruins the game, or even one quest. Leave it out. Somercy 13:52, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
I'm going to sort of agree with Eshe. I'd say that MC and Somercy are right that the general rule is "don't mention the console" but on this occasion I'd leave it in. This spell is a slightly special case for the reasons described in the article so I'd remind people that the console is there in case they missed the chance to buy the spell legitimately. Having said that, I think the reference should go in a Note rather than the main paragraph, and should include the full code (player.addspell 0003C413). So now we have three opinions. Variety is the spice of life, after all! --RpehTalk 14:57, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
I'll move the comment, then, since that seems like the best idea. Thanks for your input, everyone :). --Eshetalk15:08, 4 October 2007 (EDT)
I thank you all for your opinions. This actually looks like one of the community portal discussions. In the end, it seems Rpeh has settled the issue perfectly. --Mankar Camoran 15:22, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

Namespace links[edit]

I noticed you've been using the {{BM}} template on Bloodmoon pages. While it works, it's not really needed there. Those are meant to provide an easy way to link to pages in a different namespace. If you're linking to a page in the same namespace, all you need to do is enclose the term in [[]]s. Thus [[Dralora Favelnim]] is just as good and faster to type than {{BM|Dralora Favelnim}}. (You can also use that nice little Ab button on the top of the edit window if you've got a bunch of them.) --TheRealLurlock Talk 00:59, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

Okay, I'll keep that in mind! I kind of got into the habit of it, but I'll try to use non-template version instead. --Eshetalk18:09, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for welcoming me[edit]

I just noticed the preview page button before my last update to my page and had a feeling someone would get mad =/ I don't know much but i had edited alot of incorrect information on this site before and now i created a account hoping to edit further. One thing how do you send messages? — Unsigned comment by Western3589 (talkcontribs)

You just sent one, actually. All you have to do is edit a user's talk page, and they'll get an update telling them they have new messages. Also, don't worry about the preview thing...it's just a nice convenience for people who patrol the Recent Changes ;). --Eshetalk18:51, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

How do you make your own templates[edit]

Like your "This user is fluent with the daedric language". Also how can I make a link to my contributions page? Western3589 10:44, 4 November 2007 (EST)

Well, there's a difference between making a template and making a userbox. To make a userbox, follow the instructions on this page (scroll to the very bottom). If you still need help after checking there, let me know and I can help you. Also, your contributions page is "Special:Contributions/Western3589", so a link to it would look like [[Special:Contributions/Western3589]]. Hope that helps! --Eshetalk10:52, 4 November 2007 (EST)
Thanks, I already looked at that page and i still don't understand how to make one, where do I put the 2 colors and where are the color codes? Western3589 10:55, 4 November 2007 (EST)
The two colors go in place of #CCF|#EEF. There are lots of places that would give you a list of color codes, but I use this one. --Eshetalk11:00, 4 November 2007 (EST)
Also, you don't really need to ask the same question to more than one person at a time. Anybody watching the Recent Changes (which is a lot of us) will see the question and will answer it if they can ;). --Eshetalk11:03, 4 November 2007 (EST)
I have to thank you, Eshe. I didn't know about those colour codes at all. --Mankar CamoranTCE 11:10, 4 November 2007 (EST)
Not a problem! It's much easier than randomly punching in letters, anyway ;). --Eshetalk11:19, 4 November 2007 (EST)
You are right, but that's what I used to do till now ;). --Mankar CamoranTCE 11:39, 4 November 2007 (EST)
I noticed your reference to colour codes like "CCF" and "EEF" and thought I'd mention that using three-letter colour codes like those really is not a good idea, because IE6 does not recognize them. Anyone viewing the page in IE6 (which is still the majority of our readers) will see black instead of the desired colours. It's best to use the full six-letter colour codes, in this case "CCCCFF" and "EEEEFF". --NepheleTalk 11:48, 4 November 2007 (EST)
I was just using that because it's from the example on the userbox page...but thanks for the info ;). --Eshetalk13:10, 4 November 2007 (EST)
Oddly enough, I noticed that the Userbox template did not have that problem. It was able to render 3-letter color codes in IE6 even though they don't work in other cases. Admittedly, it's best to stick to the 6-letter ones for maximum compatibility. Or even go with the named colors for your basic primaries when possible. I don't know what the Userbox template does that's different from other color-definitions (as I just ripped it from Wikipedia), but when I tested that on IE6 it worked fine either way. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:08, 4 November 2007 (EST)

Deleting the warning[edit]

Im just asking why, I thought it was nonsense. It didn't make any sense nor is there anything called Puny Ancas on oblivion Western3589 13:14, 4 November 2007 (EST)

Ah!Puny Ancus the Imperial waterfront begger, I see what he means now. I will revise that into something more general instead of just one begger.- Western3589 13:21, 4 November 2007 (EST)

I think that was on purpose[edit]

I don't think it was a mistake if so, why would he save it, could he not see there was nothing in the box after he hit save? I can also almost believe seeing this Ip address do the same thing to the role playing page. Western3589 15:08, 6 November 2007 (EST)

Thing is, that text that replaced the page looks a lot like an Object ID to me. I think the editor meant to put the ID somewhere on the page and accidentally replaced the whole thing. Mistakes happen, particularly when you're new to wikis and you aren't paying attention to what you're doing. Users who intentionally vandalize the site in that way tend to hit a string of pages at once, or have a history of making that type of edit, neither of which is the case here. It's possible that it was intentional, but given what I've seen from new editors in the past, my instinct here is to say that it's not. --Eshetalk15:25, 6 November 2007 (EST)
Very true, When I first came here and I still sometimes do I make mistakes and realize them after I save and fix it but making un-needed space on the recent changes page, but Nothing as big as a whole page, I would have noticed that big of a mistake. But with good faith I agree with you, It was probably a mistake made by someone with not alot of time to spare and made an error. -Western3589 18:56, 12 November 2007 (EST)

Thanks and Help[edit]

Thanks Eshe for welcoming me to the site officially. I've been here though for quite a while, although not as a registered user. I use this site for everything related to Oblivion, both for PC and PS3. I decided last night to officially become a member, plus also see if I can offer my services in maybe editing or fixing. I have a high level of experience in grammar/spelling correction, plus about mid-level experience on wiki sites. I'm also running my own website and IRC Server (unrelated to Oblivion, sadly). I would definitely like to contribute in any way that I can, so could you please tell me how I can do so in such a way that can help the site most effectively. Thanks! TobyD 18:40, 12 November 2007 (EST)

Really, as far as contributions go, just about anything is fair game. The task list is a good place to start if you're looking for a project. If you want to go with smaller, grammar-oriented edits, one thing I like to do is hit the "Random Page" link until I find something that needs to be fixed. Also, there's a whole lot of stubs laying around that could use some expansion, if you're interested in that. You could also start your own project if you want, or browse through user pages to see what other people are up to, or just fix random things here and there. It's all up to you ;). --Eshetalk18:50, 12 November 2007 (EST)
I didn't think you were still on so I added the notice on maiq's page, My tea was done and I wanted to get it so I used yours from smashes talk page. Western3589 20:57, 12 November 2007 (EST)
Thanks for the advice, Eshe. I think I'm going to start working on my own project and I hope its okay. I've already started working on it in my sandbox. The link is here. I'd like someone to mentor me through the project since I am so new. ;) --TobyD 07:44, 13 November 2007 (EST)

Categories[edit]

Hey, while you're adding descriptions to these category pages, you might like to know about the Template:Cat Footer template, which can be used to link together categories that are in a sequence, such as the faction rank ones. Look at the ones in Category:Morrowind-Merchants-by-Skill for an example. --TheRealLurlock Talk 11:22, 13 November 2007 (EST)

Gah! I knew something like this was going to come up! Anyway, thanks for mentioning it. At least I'm not so far along that it's completely unrealistic to go back and get the ones I've missed. Thanks for the tip! --Eshetalk15:23, 13 November 2007 (EST)
